APPDI RELEASES LANDMARK HUMANE KENNEL STANDARDS
ST. PAUL, Minn., Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- American Professional Pet

Distributors, Inc. (APPDI) has published landmark standards to ensure that dogs and cats are raised in optimum conditions on professional kennels. APPDI is an association of professional pet breeders, distributors, retailers, suppliers and manufacturers.
"These standards are the result of an exhaustive year-long effort to develop the finest standards in the pet industry for professional kennels," said APPDI President Doug Hughes. "They will ensure that retailers and consumers who purchase APPDI pets will receive the healthiest, highest quality animals available."
The APPDI humane care standards meet or exceed all major USDA animal welfare requirements for professional kennels. The guidelines cover the full range of kennel management issues, from nutrition, housing and veterinary care to handling and transport. The standards will form the foundation for a kennel certification program, which will require on- site inspection by licensed, independent veterinarians. Only those kennels which meet all the standards during inspection will be certified by APPDI.
The standards were developed by a blue ribbon technical committee of animal care experts, including seven veterinarians. APPDI also consulted closely with state animal health officials in all 50 states, every veterinary college in the United States and Canada, The American Kennel Club, animal care experts at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and pet industry leaders.
"Our standards are based on the best technical and practical knowledge available," said Hughes. "As a result, APPDI certification will become the distinctive hallmark of quality, a seal of assurance for both pet retailers and consumers."
The APPDI board of directors will complete development of its kennel certification program within the next few months. All APPDI members will be sent a copy of the guidelines and details of the certification program as soon as they are available.
