APEX Joins Hamilton In Expanding BioTech/High Tech Venture Fund To $145MM.

Coronado is across the bay.  announced today that it is tripling its size through additional investments by a number of strategic corporate investors from Hong Kong and Korea introduced by APEX Technology Investment Co. Signing ceremonies were recently held in Hong Kong and Seoul and were attended by a number of Asian investors and four of the General Partners of the newly expanded fund, re-named 'Hamilton Apex Technology Ventures LP.' Reflecting the expanded fund's increased commitment to life science investing, Chairman Robert F. Ellsworth stated, "The welcome addition of our Asian investors at this time complements our existing American and European investors in sourcing and funding innovation in the life sciences. With over 400 biotech companies already in San Diego, new opportunities are abundant and we will be a significant Pacific Rim player in this field."

Sang Hun Kwon, President of APEX Technology Investment Co. Ltd. (of Seoul, Korea), said, "The partnership between APEX and Hamilton marks a meaningful milestone in the development of Pacific Rim biotechnology growth and development. With the fund expecting to invest 60 percent of its capital in life sciences, particularly biopharmaceuticals, drug discovery technologies and medical devices, San Diego is an ideal location. Southern California has emerged as one of the world's top biotechnology 'clusters' where large concentrations of biopharmaceutical and medical device companies as well as leading medical centers and scientific institutions are located.

Prior to expanding its fund and establishing the relationship with APEX, Hamilton Technology Ventures LP has made nine (9) portfolio investments in San Diego including Egea BioSciences Inc.; Cargo Technology Inc.; Maxima Inc.; Mohomine Inc.; Acculaser Inc.; and Angstrom angstrom (ăng`strəm), abbr. Å, unit of length equal to 10−10 meter (0.0000000001 meter); it is used to measure the wavelengths of visible light and of other forms of electromagnetic radiation, such as ultraviolet  Pharmaceuticals Inc.

As a part of its expansion, the fund has also added two new General Partners. Dr. Sandra Moon from APEX Venture Partners of Irvine, Calif. will focus on the fund's Information Technology investments. David Coats, formerly of Windamere Venture Partners and Forge Medical Ventures (both of San Diego), will concentrate on the fund's Life Science portfolio.

Donald W. Grimm, former president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Hybritech Inc. and a veteran of Eli Lilly & Company, has been named Chairman of the Fund's 'Life Science Advisory Board' and the Fund's first 'Venture Partner.'
