APERTUS TECHNOLOGIES RELEASES INTEGRATED X.25 PAD; ALLOWS DATASTAR USERS TO CONNECT TO ASYNCHRONOUS HOST COMPUTERS VIA X.25 PACKET DATA NETWORKS

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Apertus Technologies Incorporated (NASDAQ: APTS) today announced the availability of an integrated X.25 PAD (Packet Assembly/Disassembly). The product will allow users accessing an Apertus Datastar communications system to connect to asynchronous host computers via X.25 Packet Data Networks.
The Datastar X.25 module has been designed in response to customer requirements for an integrated, high-capacity module providing access to Packet Data Networks. The Datastar X.25 module supports devices emulating VT100 or VT220 terminals communicating at speeds of up to 64Kbps, and provides support for all Datastar-attached devices; including TELNET, 3270 Coax and ASCII terminals users. The X.25 module will operate concurrently with all other Datastar host links and protocols, including IBM SNA, BSC and TCP/IP.
Apertus X.25 PAD has been in use at GTE Telephone, where users report it has allowed GTE to dramatically reduce terminal connection costs and simplify network management. "By utilizing the Datastar integrated PAD, our users can transparently access a wide variety of computer systems from a single site," said Robert Abe, manager of Special Services Systems at GTE Telephone Operations. "With the Datastar, GTE has substantially reduced the complexity of network management and maintenance -- our entire network can be managed from a single terminal located anywhere on the network."
"The Datastar PAD will allow terminal users easy, cost-effective access to remote host computer resources across X.25 networks without the addition of asynchronous communication lines or stand-alone PADs," said Robert D. Gordon, Apertus' chairman and chief executive officer. "Customers are looking for a vendor who can provide this functionality today as networks become increasingly complex and difficult to manage."
