APARTMENTS EVACUATED IN AREA BEE ATTACK.

A sampling of honeybees collected outside a California City apartment complex will undergo testing to determine whether any of them are Africanized, officials said.

``I was leaving when the small swarm followed me,'' said Animal Control Officer Jim Murley. ``A couple of them stung me, and one was in my ear.''

After the apartments were evacuated, California City firefighters stood by in protective clothing and carrying a chemical solution effective in controlling bees, while an exterminator treated the hive.

The exterminator will continue to follow up over the next several days to ensure the hive has been mitigated, officials said.

Murley went to the hive shortly after 2:30 p.m. Thursday after receiving a phone call from the apartment manager, who wanted to find out if the bees around the complex were Africanized.
