Birnbaum competed with five other jazz pianists at various venues around Indianapolis for this title. As part of the fellowship, he received a $15,000 cash prize and will receive career assistance and professional engagements for the next two years, including appearances at Indy Jazz Fest The Indy Jazz Fest in Indianapolis, Indiana, first took place from June 17-20, 1999. It was created by a consortium of Downtown hospitality, civic and business interests as a way to spotlight Indianapolis' jazz heritage through an annual event. in 2004 and 2005, representation on a commercial jazz sampler CD produced by WTPIFM and a touring program.
