AOYAMA TRADING OF JAPAN AND JCPENNEY REACH LICENSING UNDERSTANDING

 PLANO, Texas, Aug. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Aoyama Trading Co., Ltd. has reached a preliminary understanding with J.C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE: JCP) to sell JCPenney men's merchandise in Aoyama stores in Japan beginning in the spring of 1994. The parties expect a formal license agreement governing the terms of the understanding to be signed in the near future.
 The JCPenney merchandise will be men's casual wear under the brand names Hunt Club, St. John's Bay, and The Original Arizona Jean Company. Under the agreement, JCPenney will also provide store layout and visual merchandising support for these brands in Aoyama stores.
 Aoyama Trading is Japan's largest men's wear retailer with 466 stores. JCPenney is the largest department store and catalog retailer in the United States.
