AOL Members Name Mark McGwire as the First Annual "AMERICAN OF THE YEAR".

    Mark David McGwire (born October 1, 1963 in Pomona, California) is a former professional baseball player who played the majority of his major league career with the Oakland Athletics before finishing his final years with the St. Louis Cardinals.
     has been named "American of the Year" by America Online's members.

    , Mark McGwire, Christopher Reeve, Matthew Shepard, Kenneth Starr, Jesse Ventura and Oprah Winfrey. Voting began on Monday, Dec. 21 and closed on New Year's Eve with more than 250,000 votes.
