AOL's Open AIM Initiative Adds Web IM Services.


New Web AIM APIs and Widgets Enable Developers To Integrate AIM Functionality Directly Into Web Pages

DULLES, Va. -- Furthering its commitment to providing open access to its popular services, AOL (A division of Time Warner, Inc., New York, NY, www.aol.com) The world's largest online information service with access to the Internet, e-mail, chat rooms and a variety of databases and services.  today announced the beta release See beta version.  of new Web-based AIM APIs (application programming interfaces) and embeddable widgets, called AIM Whimsicals, to enable developers to seamlessly integrate Web-based instant messaging Exchanging text messages in real time between two or more people logged into a particular instant messaging (IM) service. Instant messaging is more interactive than e-mail because messages are sent immediately, whereas e-mail messages can be queued up in a mail server for seconds or  functionality for the popular AIM service directly into their Web sites and online communities. Now available at http://developer.aim.com, the new Web AIM APIs and AIM Whimsicals are an extension of AOL's Open AIM program, which launched in March 2006.

Web AIM[R] provides developers with the tools to create new and innovative experiences on the Web. The APIs enable developers to integrate the following services and functionality directly into their Web sites:

* Presence, to let AIM[R] users get and set their availability, away message and profile. Friends visiting their site can view users online, idle and away times.

* IM Window, to enable AIM users to send and receive IMs right from their Web page.

* Buddy List A list of colleagues, workgroup members, friends, etc., that you might wish to communicate with via instant messaging. See instant messaging. , to let AIM users view their own Buddy List[R] feature.

* Expressions, to let AIM users access and edit their buddy icons, wallpaper wallpaper was used in Europe in the 16th and 17th cent. as an inexpensive substitute for costly hangings. The French developed marbled papers, introduced from the East via Italy and used at first for box coverings, into larger sheets for wall coverings and also made , smileys, and sounds.

* IM Window, which enables users to send and receive IMs. The sender's online presence is indicated to the recipient only.

* Buddy List, which enables AIM users to create mash-ups with their Buddy List based on user-defined criteria. In addition, this widget Pronounced "wih-jit," for decades, the term has been a popular word for a generic "thing" when there is no real name for it. It is often used to describe examples of made-up products along with other fictitious names; for example, "10 widgets, 5 frabbits and 2 dingits.  allows AIM users to see buddy info, including online, idle and away time, user profile and away message on screen name mouse-over.

* Get Info See properties. , which displays the AIM user's availability, away message, profile and buddy icon via a separate window.

The Open AIM[R] program empowers companies, communities and independent developers to build customized plugins, communications clients and mashups that access AOL's global instant messaging network. To date, more than 50,000 developers have registered for the Open AIM[R] Initiative.
