America Online See AOL.  Inc.'s fiscal first-quarter earnings more than tripled as the No. 1 online service gained almost 1 million new subscribers and increased revenue from electronic commerce and advertising.

Net income rose to $68 million, or 26 cents a share from a profit of $19.2 million, or 8 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. That beat the average earnings estimate of 23 cents a share for the quarter ended Sept. 30, according to according to
