? A showcase for some of the top defensive players in the area, or a stage on which the region's best hitters will showcase their skills?

Chances are, one of those plot lines will dominate today's 13th annual Daily News All-Star Softball Game at Cal State Northridge. Even more likely, a little bit of everything will be on display when the top seniors in the area gather at Matador matador

The day kicks off with a home run-hitting contest at 2 p.m. The game follows soon after.

So what type of game should we expect? Take your pick. The West is loaded with talented pitchers, punctuated by Chaminade's Maureen LeCocq, who was named the Gatorade National High School Player of the Year last week. LeCocq ended 1999 with 14 consecutive shutouts - she had 19 overall - the last coming in a 10-0 win against Bloomington in the Southern Section Division IV championship game.

But it isn't just LeCocq. The West also features El Camino Real's Ashley Redlin, who gave up only one run in four playoff games this year while leading the Conquistadores to the City Championship division title. Canoga Park's Jenny Pitillo, who led the Hunters to their first playoff appearance in four years, rounds out an impressive pitching staff.

Defensively, the West has shortstop Cara Blumfield of El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

Erin Taylor of Chaminade - both have been cited as two of the top infielders in the area. And if that's not enough defensive stars, the West can also turn to infielders Cindy Muran and Tawni Yamauchi (Newbury Park), Lacey Cope (Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. In the outfield, there's Kim Martin Kim Kristine Martin (born February 28, 1986 in Stockholm, Sweden) is a Swedish national ice hockey goaltender. She plays her club hockey with AIK's women's team and has also played with Hammarby IF's junior men's team.  and Vanessa Hanson (Thousand Oaks).

That kind of pitching, and a dependable defense in support, has West co-coach Joe Pitillo predicting a low-scoring game.

``I've really been impressed by the defensive players during practice,'' said Pitillo, who is joined by Newbury Park's Pete Ackermann on the West coaching staff. ``I mean, with Blumfield and Taylor at shortstop and third, those are two great players right there.''

The West catchers are Darlene Stokx (Newbury Park), Carina Carina (kərē`nə) [Lat.,=the keel], southern constellation, representing the keel of the ancient constellation Argo Navis, or Ship of the Argonauts. Carina contains Canopus, the second brightest star in the sky.  Leon (Canoga Park) and Morgan Bleimeyer (Cleveland).

Quartz Hill pitcher Jodie Cox has a sore elbow, so she won't be able to pitch today. But that won't stop the region's top power hitter from batting. The East pitching staff has Patty Del Real (Kennedy), Corrie Atwood (Saugus) and Melinda Moulden (Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest. ). Moulden is also one of the best hitters and infielders in the area. Other players to keep an eye on to watch.

are Melissa Rawson (Highland), Amanda Ivey (Burbank), Karen Tobin and Patricia Wetzel (Notre Dame) and Meghann Reiss (Alemany).

The East is coached by Quartz Hill's Coy Ray and Kennedy's Barbara Rodrigue.

``One of the nice things about a game like this is you don't really know who is going to step up and be the hero,'' Pitillo said. ``You've got a LeCocq and a Blumfield, but that wouldn't be a surprise because they're such great players and everybody knows about them. You'd like to see somebody who maybe didn't get as much attention do well, and in this type of game, that can happen.''
