PASADENA - Earlier this week, Carlos Ruiz raved about his old club, Guatemala's CSD Municipal, the team that reared the 22-year-old into Major League Soccer's leading scorer through the first month of the season.

Ruiz said he would have mixed feelings when the Galaxy welcomed Municipal to the Rose Bowl Wednesday in an international exhibition - but it took all of 12 minutes for Ruiz to find himself in a familiar spot, picking himself off the turf.

The Galaxy won 2-1 on a goal in the 70th minute in the so-called friendly match that featured aggressive play and a number of missed chances.

Municipal forward Sergio Guevara chased Ruiz and took a wicked swipe from behind, sending Ruiz sprawling to the ground and drawing a red card from referee Kevin Stott. Ruiz screamed at his former teammate and threw his arms up in disbelief, but that was how rest of the match played out, physical and with nothing more than pride on the line.

Municipal, 12-0-2 in El Salvador this season, blew an early 1-0 lead and watched it disappear completely.

Alejandro Moreno outleaped a group of defenders to head a pass from Alex Bengard past Municipal goalkeeper Edgard Eladio Estrada Solis to account for the game-winning goal before 8,524 at the Rose Bowl.

The Galaxy was playing four days after a 2-1 victory in Kansas City on Saturday, in which second-year forward Brian Mullan and rookie Gavin Glinton scored their first goals of the season.

``The approach is a little different because we played a lot of young kids against Kansas City, so it's a matter of another opportunity for those young kids to play,'' said Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid. ``We still have to be careful with our injuries, so we didn't play any fighting with nagging injuries with a game in Chicago on Saturday.''

With several players out with injuries, Jesus Ochoa, Winston Griffiths and Tyrone Marshall were rewarded again with a start against CSD Municipal.

In the second half, Schmid unloaded his bench, using 18 players overall. Included were Scott Jenkins, Jason Farrell and Andrew Gregor, called up earlier from the A-League to help relieve the Galaxy's injured roster.

CSD Municipal took a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute after some confusion in front of the Galaxy goal.

From just in front of the penalty area, Municipal's Guillermo Ramerez chipped a ball that went to Mario Acevedo, standing with his back to the goal six yards in front of the Galaxy net. Acevedo headed the ball back to Juan Carlos Plata, who redirected his shot to the near post under the outstretched arms of Galaxy goalkeeper Kevin Hartman.

The Galaxy tied the score on a header from Farrell, who finished a header from Adam Frye in the 51st minute.

Earlier, Ruiz wasted nice work by Frye up the right side.

The former UCLA defender beat Israel Donis to the end line, then sent a cross in front for Ruiz. However, Ruiz missed the near post from six yards out.
