Antonovich Michael Dennis Antonovich (born 1939 in Los Angeles, California) is a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors representing the Fifth District, which covers northern Los Angeles County, the Antelope, Santa Clarita, Pasadena, and parts of the San Fernando and San  said he will call today for an audit to find waste and redundancy.

Antonovich, who also is a county supervisor, said the agency must undergo enormous change if it is to avoid an estimated deficit of $438 million within the next 10 years.

``All phases of the MTA's operational and management structure need to be on the table for the agency to survive,'' Antonovich said. ``Although the recent union contract agreement will result in some savings, it remains vital that waste and duplication duplication /du·pli·ca·tion/ (doo-pli-ka´shun)

Last week, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority ended a 32-day transit strike by settling a contract with its 4,300 bus and rail drivers. The MTA contends that by holding its ground in negotiations, it will save about $25 million over the next three years.

MTA spokesman Ed Scannell said the agency has already made cuts. ``While we believe these cuts have made the agency a much leaner operation, we will continue trying to make the MTA more efficient.''

Antonovich said he will propose laying off ``high-paid staff who are nonproductive'' and reducing redundancy.

Other potential areas to cut include government relations and the planning departments.

``We need to have a real analysis to show where there is an ability to trim. It means looking at the entire agency.''

As of Monday, the MTA has seen a 14 percent drop in rail and subway subway: see rapid transit.
