ANTIQUE FUN APPRAISERS HOLD CLINIC AT LANCASTER MUSEUM.Byline: Peggy Hager Staff Writer LANCASTER - If the measure of success is how many people are lined up at the door, then the appraisal clinic at the Lancaster Museum/Art Gallery was a huge success. The line of people, some of whom had been waiting since 8 a.m., snaked around the block and through the building before coming to a stop just outside of the room the appraisers were in. ``It's a surprise pleasant madhouse,'' said museum curator Norma Gurba. ``Because we weren't sure how it would be.'' Inside the building dozens of people waited in lines for one of the 10 appraisers to view their items and give them some idea of their worth. Susan Brisby came with her husband Jeff to have a painting and two Mickey Mouse Mickey Mouse Famous character of Walt Disney's animated cartoons. He was introduced in Steamboat Willie (1928), the first animated cartoon with sound. Mickey was created by Disney, who also provided his high-pitched voice, and was usually drawn by the studio's head animator, collectibles appraised. ``This one was 1941,'' said Susan, indicating a Disney porcelain candy jar marked, ``Lolly pops for good little boys and girls boys and girls mercurialisannua. ,'' on the top. ``My mom used it for me when I was a little girl,'' she added. Appraiser A person selected or appointed by a competent authority or an interested party to evaluate the financial worth of property. Appraisers are frequently appointed in probate and condemnation proceedings and are also used by banks and real estate concerns to determine the market Claudia Miller from Estate Sale Services in Quartz Hill appraised the candy jar at $50-$75. Susan's statue of Mickey Mouse, made in Japan in the 1950s or 1960s, had a few nicks and was appraised at $15-$25. Unfortunately, the Southwestern painting of Hopi artwork Susan bought two years ago for $250, that Jeff was getting appraised, didn't have as favorable results. ``They say it's a common painting. It's not really valuable,'' said Jeff Brisby. Outside, in the middle of the line waiting to get in, stood Mary Cannon with a marble and metal candelabra. Her husband, Jennings, waited at a picnic table A picnic table (or sometimes a picnic bench) is a modified table with benches expressly for the purpose of eating a meal outdoors (picnicking). In the past, picnic tables were typically made of wood, but modern tables can be made out of anything from recycled plastic to in the shade with a matching marble clock and metal statue of a young woman, her arms in the air, with a bird perched on one hand. It was to given to them by their daughter nearly 30 years ago. ``I'd like to know who did the sculpture,'' said Mary, adding, ``for insurance purposes it would be nice to have an idea (of its worth).'' Besides clocks and collectibles, appraisals were made of lace, paper, watches, fabrics, pottery, fine arts and jewelry jewelry, personal adornments worn for ornament or utility, to show rank or wealth, or to follow superstitious custom or fashion. All of the appraisers participating in Saturday's event donated their time to the Museum/Art Gallery. They were kept very busy by people both young and old, waiting their turn to have their treasure discovered. At noon people were still showing up to get in line. ``Hopefully the appraisers will stay - we want to try and get everyone,'' said Gurba.
