ANTI-LANDFILL SUPPORT DRAWS MIXED REPLY.

Byline: Kerry Cavanaugh Staff Writer

In announcing her support for closing the Bradley Solid Waste Landfill in Sun Valley, Councilwoman Ruth Galanter Ruth Galanter was a city councilwoman from Los Angeles. She served as President Pro-Tempore and President of the city council.  ended up angering some who are trying to shut down the Sunshine Canyon Landfill in Granada Hills.

In a Thursday press release, Galanter said Sun Valley has long suffered from dust, truck exhaust and air pollution from Bradley.

``What's wrong with this picture: Politicians are tripping over Tripping Over is a British/Australian six-part drama series. Its first episode aired on Network Ten in Australia on October 25 2006, and in the United Kingdom on Five on October 30 2006. Sunshine Canyon is located in a wealthy white area of the city; Bradley is located in a much less wealthy and much more minority community,'' Galanter wrote. ``This is environmental racism Environmental racism is intentional or unintentional racial discrimination in the enforcement of environmental rules and regulations, the intentional or unintentional targeting of minority communities for the siting of polluting industries such as toxic waste disposal, or the  and like all racism should be fought ... Other communities should continue to share the burden.''

The statement was cheered by East Valley Coalition members fighting the Bradley Landfill, but it didn't sit well with those who have tried to shut down Sunshine Canyon.

``There are no other active dumps DUMPS

except Sunshine Canyon,'' said Kim Thompson, a longtime activist who is running for a council seat in the new Valley city.

``I think Bel-Air needs a dump. I think all 14 council districts should take their own trash.''

Galanter's deputy chief of staff, Mike Bonin, said the councilwoman believes the entire city should share the burden of dealing with trash.

``She's always been an advocate for finding ways to promote more recycling,'' he said.

But Thompson said trash and land-use issues are at the heart of the secession movement and that Galanter's comments only add fuel to the fire.
