ANTI-CRIME EFFORT AIMED AT THE YOUNG.

Byline: Stacy Brown Daily News Staff Writer

Deputies in one of America's safest cities plan to target juvenile crime with a $181,000 federal grant.

``The grant is expected to be used for programs such as the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. ``The grant is really important because it funds things such as truancy sweeps, and as a result of the sweeps the local authorities said they've noticed a decrease in daytime burglaries in Santa Clarita,'' Matsuoka said.

The grant will mean more bike patrols along the paseos, parks and trails; drunk-driving checkpoints scheduled to coincide with local high school proms and graduations; truancy sweeps; and alcohol stings in which deputies cite store clerks who are caught selling alcohol to buyers younger than 21.

``We are focusing on the youth. The grant is a great resource for us to be able to do the patrols,'' said Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California.
