ANTELOPES READY TO GO\Division I-AA tourney starts play tonight.

Byline: Kathy Orton Special to the Daily News

When Antelope Valley High School Antelope Valley High School is located in Lancaster, California and is part of the Antelope Valley Union High School District. It was founded in 1912[1]. It is located in the Mojave Desert.  boys basketball coach Tom Mahan began the season, he set three goals for his team - capture the Golden League championship, post a 20-win season and pick up a couple of wins in the playoffs.

"I didn't want to be greedy," Mahan said, laughing.

Well, the Antelopes fell a couple baskets short of winning the league title and missed a 20-win season by a couple of games, but nonetheless, at 18-7, they finished with the second-best record in school history. That with just two seniors, 10 underclassmen and a season filled with injury and illness.

Now with the way the Division I-AA brackets played out with Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
entering the playoffs as the No. 2 seed from the Golden League, its fortunes seemed to have turned around.

The Antelopes have perhaps the best chance of the three Golden League teams of advancing to the second round (see Highland vs. Santa Ana Valley The Santa Ana Valley is located in Orange County, California and is bisected by the Santa Ana River. Antelope Valley's first-round opponent, Lynwood (15-9), finished second in the San Gabriel Valley The San Gabriel Valley is one of the principal valleys of southern California. The Knights are led from the outside by two talented senior guards, 6-foot Jermaine Taylor and 5-foot-11-inch Melvin Farmer, and from the inside by Division I-prospect Greg Lakey (6-8, 195-pound junior) and Sta'fon Lawson (6-4, 210-pound senior).

Antelope Valley has the athletes to match up with Lynwood. Le'tre Kelly (13.7 points, 12.1 rebounds per game) and Marc Buckner (9.6 points, 8.7 rebounds per game) should give Lakey and Lawson a workout, while Tony Walker (14.5 points, 6.4 assists) and Ziaire Williams (12.3 points) are likely to give fits to Taylor and Farmer.

"I'm really excited (about the playoffs)," Mahan said. "They're ready to play."

Valley's 10-15 record is deceptive. The Falcons forfeited six games because of an ineligible reserve player. The team also was hit hard by injuries and illness throughout the season.

Ike Harmon, a 6-7, 185-pound senior forward, leads Orange County in rebounding with an average of 11 per game. He shoots 70 percent from the field for an average of 22 points per game.

But if the Bulldogs are going to have a chance against Santa Ana Valley, they need more production from all players on the court.

Palmdale at Victor Valley: The young Falcons face a tough first-round test. The Jackrabbits (23-2) are the No. 3 seeded team in Division I-AA with their only two losses coming to Citrus Belt League-rival Fontana.

, adds 17.3 points a game.

True to their name, the Jackrabbits love to run and push the tempo of the game. Fontana was able to beat them by slowing the game down. Victor Valley has not scored less than 68 points in 24 of their 25 games and scored 110 against league-rival Hesperia.

Markus Carr (15.3 points, 5.1 assists) needs to utilize his best ball-handling skills to break the Jackrabbits' tenacious press. Steve Eernisse (20 points, 8.9 rebounds) must use his bulk inside if the Falcons are to have a chance. Expect Theo Carino to go to work defensively on either Sylvester or Beal.

at Paraclete: The Vikings (17-10) came within one point of winning the Division IV-AA championship last year and are a tough first-round draw for the Spirits.

Senior guard Danny Stephens' experience will be needed against St. Bernard. Stephens averages 12.2 points for Paraclete. Josh Foster (9.6 points, 7.2 rebounds per game), Jason Julius (9.3 points, 7.6 rebounds per game) and Tony Gaeta (8.8 points, 6.7 rebounds per game) are also keys.

First Lutheran at Antelope Valley Christian: Johnny Morales (21 points, seven rebounds per game), Patrick Bowen (15 points, nine rebounds per game), Aaron Nurse (11 points per game) and Tim Markin (10 points per game) haven't seen much playing time this season as the undefeated Eagles have blown out their opponents.
