``I'm very pleased with it. It recognizes the hard work by our faculty and staff,'' said college President Linda Spink.

renewal process every six years. It must provide a report by Nov. 1, 2001, detailing the progress it has made in the areas identified as needing improvement.

This term, the college has been instructed to make progress on its ability to plan for future needs, its development of a system to track student progress and its development of effective shared governance practices.

The college also must devise a clear policy on academic freedom - the ability of instructors to express their views and opinions, and to present course material as they see fit. That issue will be discussed this spring between the faculty and administration.

The college also is at work on the other issues, Spink said.

For example, the college is installing a computer system that will capture data on the progress of students, helping the college plan for courses and facilities. The college also created a director of research position to help with planning and student data collection.

On the issue of shared governance, representatives of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges and the Community College League will help Antelope Valley College shape its policies regarding how responsibilities are divided among administration and faculty.

In addition to the recommendations, the college was commended for ``its atmosphere of renewed morale and enthusiasm and for its reinvigorated re·in·vig·o·rate

The college also was commended for its new library and the new learning center, which the report described as ``a model for other institutions''; the implementation of telecommunications Communicating information, including data, text, pictures, voice and video over long distance.
