The Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  softball team has some similarities to the school's highly successful women's basketball Women's basketball is one of the few games which developed in tandem with men's. It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges.  team - they both embrace the team concept and have dominated conference play.

The basketball team made it to the state tournament semifinals. The softball team could be on its way to an equally successful season.

The Marauders are 6-0 in the Foothill Conference and have outscored opponents 57-14.

``That says a lot,'' coach Cindy Vargas said. ``We've got speed up front, speed at the end and power in the middle. One through nine, everyone can hit.''

Ricker has been effective on offense and as the team's No. 2 pitcher. Ricker has a team-high 26 runs scored with three stolen bases. On the mound, she is 6-4 with 36 strikeouts and is 4-0 in conference.

``(Ricker) has definitely pitched better than her record indicates,'' Vargas said. ``Especially when we've needed her.''

``That was a tough game,'' Vargas said. ``She battled through and we lost 8-6. It's just good to get her out there and get some innings. She'll get more time in the Ventura tournament (Saturday and Sunday).''

--Showing improvement: The women's tennis team, which returned just two players from last season, is struggling. The Marauders are 2-6 overall and 1-5 in the Foothill Conference while their freshmen adjust to the college format. In high school, players play one set against three players. In college, they play two of three sets against one opponent.

 (Quartz Hill) is having the most success of the new players at 3-4.

``She's more of a volleyer and has good ground strokes,'' coach Barry Green said. ``The adjustment has been tough, but she's getting better.''

Green also is impressed with the progress of Erin Wek, a graduate of Oaks Christian Academy of Acton.

``She's just a great athlete,'' Green said. ``She's physically strong and will do some good things for us.''
