women's volleyball team, sophomores are asked to take a leadership role that extends beyond the court.

Duties include running portions of practices, teaching freshmen players how to act in the locker room and how to represent the program.

``We put a lot of responsibilities on them because they've been here and they know what to expect,'' Marauders coach Jane Cwayna said.

sophomores Jennie Nua (Palmdale High), TaMesha Jefferson (Lancaster), Tiffany Bull (Littlerock) and Erin Buena (Palmdale) are thriving in the roles.

The Marauders (4-1 nonconference heading into action Wednesday) are off to one of their best starts in years.

``They're much more serious than they were last year,'' Cwayna said. ``Their leadership is coming through and I think that's helped us a lot.''

AVC's season highlights include a 30-25, 29-31, 22-30, 30-17, 15-13 victory Friday over perennial Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  power East L.A., a match that lasted more than 2 1/2 hours. Jennie Nua had 20 kills and her little sister Kristy (Palmdale) added 17.

The Marauders' success is not unexpected. AVC went 5-1 in the second round of Foothill Conference play last season, its only loss in that stretch against conference champion San Bernardino Valley The San Bernardino Valley is the hub of Southern California's Inland Empire. It is drained by the Santa Ana River. It is bordered on the north by the San Bernardino Mountains and the eastern San Gabriel Mountains, on the east by the San Jacinto Mountains, and on the south and west . The Marauders open conference play on Friday at 5 p.m. at Victor Valley of Victorville.

AVC is seeking its first conference title since 1993 in what figures to be an open race.

``We think we have the ability to win (the conference),'' Cwayna said. ``We have as good a chance as anybody.''

--Tough and dependable: Freshman Amber Solis (Littlerock) has played with an injured in·jure

She's played through the pain and has emerged as one of the women's soccer team's top players.

Solis leads the team with three goals while playing a variety of positions - from striker to sweeper. Her versatility as been invaluable to a team that's lost two starting midfielders: Carina Carina (kərē`nə) [Lat.,=the keel], southern constellation, representing the keel of the ancient constellation Argo Navis, or Ship of the Argonauts. Verdugo has been cleared to start practicing next week. Lympany rejoined the team earlier this week.

``(Solis has) been tough and dependable,'' AVC coach Lemuel Galvao said. ``She's been a pleasure to coach.''

Sweeper Jillian Janosky (Quartz Hill) and goalkeeper Chanel Weber (Palmdale) also have been among the Marauders' top players. Striker Katie Tague (Palmdale), defender Erika Mendoza (Palmdale) and midfielder Meghan-Rose Bertell (Quartz Hill) have also made key contributions for AVC (1-1-1, 2-8-1), which is among six teams separated by just two points in the Foothill Conference standings.

San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  Mesa was the football team's 10th consecutive defeat, the longest losing streak in Brent Carder's 35-plus year AVC coaching career. The program's longest losing streak is 17 games, a mark set in 1949-51.
