The Marauders have kept winning because somebody has stepped up nearly every game.

Such as LaShanna Bridgeforth, a freshman guard/forward who has made a major impact after starting the season as a role player.

Bridgeforth (Littlerock High) scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds - both career highs - in AVC's 76-53 Foothill Conference victory Saturday over Desert of Palm Desert.

She scored 13 points in Monday's 66-58 conference win over Cerro Coso of Ridgecrest.

said. ``She's been a huge factor, and it couldn't have come at a better time for us.''

Because of players such as Bridgeforth, AVC (19-8 overall, 9-1 Foothill) is in a strong position to win its fourth consecutive conference championship. The Marauders can secure the a title by winning its four remaining regular-season games.

``Considering everything that's has been thrown at us, it's really a credit to the kids that we're in this position,'' Taylor said. ``We're not going to out-talent everybody with this team. They've had to grind out some wins, but they're doing the job right now, and that's the sign of a champion.''

--Shocker: The women's softball team won the Mt. Katie Cornelison (Lancaster) hit two solo homers.

Cornelison's second homer started a controversial seventh inning. The game had been called by umpires after six innings because tournament rules stipulate stip·u·late 1

Mt. San Antonio coaches successfully argued that the sixth inning ended a minute before the time deadline.

``When we went back on the field, the girls were pretty fired up, and (Katie) just crushed it over the right-field fence,'' Antelope Valley coach Cindy Vargas said.

The victory over a top-ranked team is believed to be the first in school history.

Previously unranked AVC is now 11th in the state and fifth in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, .

--Tall order: A tough 73-67 overtime loss Saturday to Desert dealt a major blow to the men's basketball team (12-15, 5-5), which likely must win its four remaining regular-season games to keep hope alive of reaching the playoffs.

The Marauders have made the playoffs every year since Newton Chelette, who is retiring after 17 seasons as coach, took over the program.

Inexperience has hurt AVC, which has blown big late leads in several conference losses. The Marauders returned just one player (shooting guard The Shooting guard (SG), also known as the two or off guard,[1] is one of five traditional positions on a basketball team. Players of the position are often shorter, leaner, and quicker than forwards.  Deonte Huff) with significant experience.

``Believe it or not, it really doesn't bother me,'' Chelette said. ``I'm not going to let one season dampen everything we've accomplished here in 16 years. I'd just like it for these players to experience some success.

``This group has improved (since the season's start) more than any group I've coached at AVC, it's just that they had so far to come.''
