ANTELOPE VALLEY COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: CORNELISON ON POWER TRIP FOR NO. 1 MARAUDERS.

Byline: Gideon Rubin Special to the Daily News

LANCASTER - Considering she hit just five home runs in her high school career, that Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  freshman first baseman Katie Cornelison tied the school's single-season record with eight homers is remarkable.

That she has done it just 13 games into the season is stunning.

Cornelison (Lancaster High) tied the school record Saturday at the Irvine tournament.

With 26 remaining regular-season games after Tuesday's nonconference encounter with El Camino of Torrance, Cornelison is on pace to obliterate o·blit·er·ate

(11-2), unranked in the state poll at the start of the season, was tied with Palomar of San Marcos atop the most recent state rankings, which were released Monday.

``I'm very amazed,'' AVC coach Cindy Vargas said. ``She's seeing the ball really well, and she's driving it. She's actually surprised herself.''

Cornelison was 5 for 13 with one homer and four RBIs in the Irvine tournament.

Sophomore center fielder Nicole Means was 5 for 10 with five RBIs including a three-run homer Sunday in a 3-1 victory over Saddleback Saddleback

Pitching also has been key for the Marauders, with freshmen Nikki Perez (Littlerock), Laura Calvert (Quartz Hill), Frances Stone and sophomore Amanda Nelson (Quartz Hill) contributing for AVC.

The state's No. 1 ranking is an AVC first.

``I knew we had a great team in the beginning of the season, but we had a lot of question marks,'' Vargas said. ``We had a lot of freshmen coming in, and we were trying to fill in some voids.

``I would say we're pretty pleased with the outcome so far.''

--Appeal: AVC's four-inning, 8-7 loss to San Joaquin Delta of Stockton in Saturday's Irvine tournament game is under review. Umpires enforced a tournament rule that does not allow an inning to start after an hour and 45 minutes has elapsed e·lapse

AVC rallied from an 8-1 deficit after three innings. SJDC SJDC San Joaquin Delta College (Stockton, CA)  is ranked fourth in the state.

--Title town: The women's basketball team can clinch at least a share of its fourth consecutive Foothill Conference title today when it plays host to San Bernardino Valley The San Bernardino Valley is the hub of Southern California's Inland Empire. It is drained by the Santa Ana River. It is bordered on the north by the San Bernardino Mountains and the eastern San Gabriel Mountains, on the east by the San Jacinto Mountains, and on the south and west  at 5 p.m.

The Marauders (21-8, 11-1) can win the title outright if they win out their two remaining regular-season games. They play host to Barstow on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Winning the title outright, as opposed to sharing it, could have enormous implications on Southern California regional playoff seedings, coach John Taylor said.

--'Huge boost': Sophomore power forward Angela Conde, who has been out three weeks with a broken left hand, could return tonight.

``It's a huge boost if she comes back,'' Taylor said.

--Eliminated? The men's basketball team (12-17, 5-7) has been all but officially eliminated from playoff competition after its third consecutive loss, 72-65 Saturday to Mt. San Jacinto of Hemet.

AVC has made the playoffs in each of retiring coach Newton Chelette's 16 previous years, meaning Saturday's game against Barstow will be his last.
