It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  men's basketball coach smart for scheduling tough preseason opponents with the hope the competition would better prepare his team for Foothill Conference play.

It appears the strategy just might have worked considering Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

``There is no struggle at all right now. We're playing some good ball,'' Chelette said of his team, which has won eight of its past nine games and 10 of 12 against several teams ranked in the most recent California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W).  Community College Men's Basketball Coaches Association poll.

``We haven't had any breathers so far. Every game has been tough.''

Antelope Valley, ranked No. 9 in the state, won the Canyons tournament championship over the weekend and beat Riverside, ranked No. 2 in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. After Saturday's game, Antelope Valley will play three conference games in six days, two of which are on the road against Chaffey and Barstow.

``As we speak, everyone in our conference (has a 0-0 record),'' he said. ``Unfortunately, our conference is the toughest in Southern California, so we'll have to be ready.

``Even the teams that don't have good records are formidable. They can beat any team at any time. We can't slip up and overlook anyone. We have to get done what needs to get done.''

When asked whether going undefeated in conference play was a possibility, Chelette said: ``For any coach to say they're going to do that is absolutely insane INSANE. There's too many quality teams.

``I do like our chances over anyone else's, though.''

--Change of scenery: Jerad Romo, AVC's standout quarterback this past season, is adjusting to life at Southern Methodist University Southern Methodist University, at Dallas, Tex.; United Methodist; coeducational; chartered 1911. The school's facilities include laboratories for electron microscopy and stable isotopes, a museum of paleontology, and a graduate research center.  and had the opportunity to get acclimated to his new surroundings last week.

``So far so good,'' Romo said Wednesday from his cell phone. ``The facilities are top-notch. I've had a chance to get in the weight room and get out on the field and throw the ball around. It's great to be able to use the best equipment out there.''

Romo accepted a scholarship this month, and the 6-foot-2, 210-pound left-hander is expected one of the front-runners in the battle for his position.

``They've had some quarterback problems in the past. No one wanted to step up and be a leader. I can be that person,'' he said.

``As far as I know, and as far as the coaches tell me, I'm set up to succeed here. I just have to outwork everybody. It's a great opportunity.''
