The Marauders, who hadn't won a tournament title in school history before this season, now have two barely more than a week into the season.

The Marauders' strong start is reflected in the early polls, too. Freshman forward center Kelli Valentine (Lancaster) had a breakthrough game for AVC with 15 points and 13 rebounds against Glendale.

Despite the rankings and impressive accomplishments, AVC coach John Taylor believes there's room for improvement, noting his team has committed too many turnovers and hasn't yet fully grasped a system that requires players to block for better rebounding position on both ends of the floor, something they'll need to do to overcome a relative lack of size.

Taylor was sure to point out those perceived weaknesses on Monday when the team spent its practice reviewing film.

``When we start playing some of the best teams in state, those are things we're going to need to do,'' Taylor said.

That Taylor found fault with his team's play is by his own admission because of the lofty goals he has set for the team. Those goals center on winning a fourth consecutive Foothill Conference championship and winning a state title.

And even Taylor said the team's play wasn't all bad.

``I thought we made big plays with games on the line and that's something you just can't teach,'' Taylor said. ``It shows a lot of heart and it shows they want to win. When it counts, they really get after it.'

The Saddleback loss dropped the Marauders from ninth to tied for 19th in the state coaches' poll and from fifth to a tie for ninth in Southern California.

AVC was led by all-tournament selection Wendell White, a sophomore forward.

``I thought we played really hard and we played together but sometimes didn't play with a lot of intelligence,'' coach Newton Chelette said. ``That's something we can correct with time, but we have a lot of freshmen and we have a lot of sophomores who didn't play that much last year, so it's going to take time.''
