ANTELOPE VALLEY COLLEGE: AVC WOMEN ON THE DEFENSIVE.

Byline: Gideon Rubin Staff Writer

LANCASTER - Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
College's women's soccer team turned to a more defensive system out of necessity after suffering significant personnel setbacks earlier this month.

The Marauders went from a 4-4-2 alignment - with four defenders, four midfielders and two strikers - to a 4-5-1, in which only one forward is employed.

Freshman defenders Felicia Darnold (Quartz Hill) and Courtney McFarlane (Quartz Hill) left the team for personal reasons within days of Teddy's injury.

Teddy and Darnold were both starters.

Since changing alignments, AVC is 1-1-2, with a 3-1 victory Oct. 12 over Mt. ``We're learning how to adjust to the switch,'' Galvao said. ``We've adapted well.''

Galvao said his first priority in making the change was solidifying the team's defense, but the Marauders have been surprisingly productive out of the alignment, scoring seven goals in their first three games in the 4-5-1.

Opponents tend to station more defenders on the side of the field AVC positions its striker, Galvao said, creating opportunities for a midfielders to attack lightly defended territory in front of the goal.

--Final push: AVC (5-5-3, 3-3-2) is essentially out of contention for a playoff berth, but Galvao's goal is finishing out the season by winning at least three of the final four games. That would guarantee a third-place finish Noun 1. third-place finish - a finish in third place (as in a race)

Galvao said a strong finish would nicely cap the graduating sophomores' AVC careers, and it would bolster the program's reputation in the area, aiding recruiting.

``If we win three of our last four, we can say we were 6-4-2 (in conference) and finished third,'' Galvao said. ``It gives us something to work with.''

White, who last season was the program's first freshman selected first- team all-state, is the first Marauders All-American.
