``I think we just got better, played together better. There are so many new faces, inexperienced players hadn't played at the college level,'' said coach Newton Chelette. ``We'll be a much better team in a month than we are right now.''

Sophomore Jeronne Saxton, the only starter from last year's conference championship team, has shown his leadership on the court by leading the Marauders in rebounds and blocks.

In the tournament, Saxton led the team in scoring against Mira Costa and in the loss to Moorpark. Saxton and Nick O'Neill were named to the all-tournament team.

The Marauders opened the tournament with a 96-65 win over L.A. Trade Tech on Thursday and qualified for the final bracket with a 58-56 win over Mira Costa.

Yet Chelette was not pleased with the team's performance Sunday. ``We weren't ready to play,'' he said, noting overconfidence o·ver·con·fi·dent

Although the two schools are in close proximity of one another, Chelette said there is no rivalry between the schools.

``We've played every year for 11 years. There is mutual respect for each other. The programs are always competitive,'' Chelette said.

The Marauders come in having played well recently, while Canyons has struggled. The Cougars have been getting production from freshman Nana Gbewonyo, who had 11 points in the team's final game at the AVC tournament.

``They are always well coached and play very tough defense,'' Chelette said. ``It puts pressure on us to play well. If you don't play well against them, you will get embarrassed.''
