``The note gave rise to the deputies who read it,'' said Sgt. Pat Hunter. ``It did not have his name on it.''

The box was cautiously opened by arson-explosives deputies, who discovered it contained clothing.

20 fire crews confront swift-moving blaze

QUARTZ HILL - More than 20 fire units battled a fast-moving grass fire that broke out around 6 p.m. Tuesday near 70th Street West and Avenue K-4.

No word was immediately available on what might have started the fire, which blackened black·en

Public's help sought in hit-and-run incident

PALMDALE - Sheriff's officials are asking for the public's help in identifying and locating a motorist who hit a bicyclist and then fled.

The bicyclist, who suffered minor injuries, was hit from the rear at 7:05 p.m. April 30 on Avenue R-12 west of 50th Street East, officials said.

The vehicle is described as possibly being a red 1985 to 1988 Ford Escort Over the years, the name 'Ford Escort' has been used for several models.

MOJAVE - Kern County sheriff's officials are investigating the death of a transient who was found early Monday.

The man, who has not been identified, was found in the desert about 5:42 a.m. Monday approximately one-half block south of Highway 14. He was found by a Los Angeles Department of Water and Power The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is the largest municipal utility in the United States, serving 3.9 million residents in 2006. It was founded in 1902 to deliver water and electricity supplies to residents and businesses in Los Angeles.  employee, officials said.

Officials say the death is suspicious but would not elaborate.

Kern County officials to hold road meeting

TEHACHAPI - An update on a ``wish list'' of highway and traffic improvements will be presented at the May 14 meeting of the East Kern Alliance.

Representatives of the Kern Council of Governments will discuss responses to suggestions presented at an alliance meeting in October.

The meeting, open to the public, will be held in the Summit Dining Hall, on Tehachapi Boulevard at Highway 58 east of Tehachapi. A no-host chicken dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m.
