 brakes on a Wilsona School District bus returning from a field trip to the Museum of Natural History in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  on Tuesday evening were blamed for a crash that injured an 11-year-old girl, authorities said.

The bus was carrying 37 Challenger Middle School students when its brakes failed on Pearblossom Highway approaching Barrel Springs Road and the vehicle crashed into a traffic signal pole, officials said.

Driver Linda Kunkel, 33, of Palmdale, said she realized the brakes were not working when she attempted to stop for the signal. She said she steered around a van stopped for the red light and hit the pole.
