ANTELOPE VALLEY: BRIEFLY : MAN, 56, SENTENCED IN RACIAL HATE CRIME.

LANCASTER - A Palmdale man accused of carrying a shotgun as he directed racial threats at African-American teen-agers was sentenced to a year in jail and placed on five years' probation.

John Berg, 56, was sentenced Tuesday after pleading no contest to a count of assault with a deadly weapon and admitting he committed a hate crime in the July 29 incident outside the Word of Life Outreach Ministries church.

Deputies said Berg made racial slurs and pointed a gun at the youths.

The teens ran toward the church, where workers called the sheriff's station. The youths led deputies to Berg's home, where he was arrested.
