Lancaster (lăng`kəstər), city (1991 pop. 43,902) and district, county seat of Lancashire, NW England, on the Lune River.
 - Entries are being welcomed for the city's eighth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day essay contest.

Children in grades 3-5 should write a 100- to 150-word essay beginning with, ``If I could talk to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I would say. . . . ''

Students in grades 6-8 will address the topic ``The Dream: What Can I Do to Make It Come True?'' in essays 200 to 250 words long.

Students in grades 9-12 will address the topic ``How Can You Apply Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Message to Help Achieve Racial Harmony?'' Essays should be between 300 and 400 words.

Students attending any of Lancaster's school districts are eligible. Winners in each category will have their essays read as part of the city's Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration Jan. 19 at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center A performing arts center, often abbreviated PAC, is a multi-use performance space that can be adapted for use by various types of the performing arts, including dance, music and theatre. .

Library to host preschool program

PALMDALE Palmdale, city (1990 pop. 68,842), Los Angeles co., S Calif., in the irrigated Antelope Valley; a growing residential suburb of Los Angeles near Little Rock Creek where it forms Lake Palmdale Reservoir, inc. 1962.  - Story-time programs for preschoolers will be held 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday at the Palmdale City Library, 700 E.
