Man sentenced in landlord's slaying

LANCASTER - An ex-convict was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years to life in prison for murdering his 70-year-old landlord, who was strangled stran·gle

Ernest Anthony Alva, 28, pleaded no contest Oct. 31 to murder in the slaying of Michael Lipsky after prosecutors agreed to dismiss a special circumstance allegation that would have made Alva liable for life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Authorities believe Lipsky died March 16. His body was found by sheriff's deputies April 2 after neighbors became concerned after not seeing the man for more than two weeks.

Mojave officials OK school funds

MOJAVE - Mojave Unified School District trustees have approved spending $113,886 in extra state aid to refurbish play areas and redo To reverse an undo operation. See undo.  wiring at Mojave High School for computers and the alarm system.

The board voted 5-0 at Tuesday's board meeting to spend $10,000 on the rewiring project and $103,886 to replace damaged asphalt areas at the district's schools with concrete play areas, Assistant Superintendent Penelope Swenson said.

Under the state law that made the extra money available, the funding must be used for instructional materials, library resources, deferred maintenance, education technology or any other nonrecurring costs.

Crash victim's name released

ROSAMOND - A motorist killed Tuesday afternoon in a three-vehicle collision on Avenue A at 60th Street West has been identified as 80-year-old George William Cowgill of Joshua Tree.

The California Highway Patrol said Cowgill had stopped for a stop sign for westbound Avenue A at 60th Street West, but pulled out in front of a 1995 Mazda minivan traveling south on 60th. There are no stop signs at the intersection for traffic on 60th, authorities said.
