LANCASTER - The Lancaster City Council approved spending $30,000 to train a team of medical professionals to examine suspected child abuse victims in local emergency rooms.

Acting on a recommendation from a child abuse task force, the City Council unanimously approved the funding Monday night. The team, dubbed SCAN for Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect, will examine children to determine what injuries are the results of true accidents and which are abuse.

Establishing the team is estimated to cost $60,000. The rest of the funding will be raised from the community, city officials said.
