ANTELOPE VALLEY: BRIEFLY : HEARING POSTPONED IN `3 STRIKES' CASE.

LANCASTER - A hearing to reconsider a life sentence for a ``three strikes, you're out'' defendant was postponed Tuesday because a state Supreme Court ruling affecting that sentencing law is not yet official.

Raymond Hawkins, 42, of Palmdale is seeking a reduction in his 27 years to life sentence for his ``third strike'' conviction of a drug charge after the state's high court ruled that judges can disregard a prior conviction or ``strike'' to reduce a sentence in the interest of justice.

The ``three strikes'' law requires a prison term of 25 years to life for a person convicted of a third crime after two previous felonies. Hawkins has two prior robbery convictions Noun 1. robbery conviction - conviction for robbery
judgment of conviction, sentence, conviction, condemnation - (criminal law) a final judgment of guilty in a criminal case and the punishment that is imposed; "the conviction came as no surprise"
 from 1986.
