from the state this year to help pay for 105 portable classrooms.

The classrooms are needed for the district's plan to reduce class sizes in grades one through three.

As part of the statewide class-size reduction effort, the state is providing $25,000 per classroom building. Because that is not enough to cover the cost of installation charges and architectural fees, the school district will use extra money allotted it because state revenues ran higher than expected.

The district has hired more than 90 teachers in the effort to cut class sizes to 20 students per teacher in the three primary grades by February. The district's average class size now is 30 students.
