LANCASTER - A candle left burning in an apartment was blamed for a fire early Wednesday that destroyed that unit and damaged another, fire officials said.

``When we arrived, there was heavy fire coming from a downstairs apartment window,'' said Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Fire Capt. Joel Harrison. ``We had it under control within minutes.''

Officials said no one was home in the downstairs unit in the 3200 block of West Avenue J-6. Damage was estimated at $10,000 to the structure of the downstairs apartment and $5,500 to its contents, and $1,000 to the structure and $500 to the contents of the upstairs apartment.

Palmdale teachers get tentative pact

PALMDALE - Seven children on their way home from school suffered minor injuries Tuesday when their school bus made an abrupt stop.

Fire at empty home called suspicious

PALMDALE - Fire officials are calling suspicious a fire that charred the roof of an abandoned home Tuesday afternoon, fire officials said.
