ANTELOPE VALLEY: BRIEFLY : AIR FORCE BURNS UP FLAWED ROCKET FUEL.


EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway.  - Four 500-pound canisters of a rocket fuel called pentaborane were disposed of in a controlled burn Prescribed or controlled burning (back burning) is a technique sometimes used in forest management, farming, prairie restoration or greenhouse gas abatement. Fire is a natural part of both forest and grassland ecology and controlled fire can be a tool for foresters.  Thursday at Phillips Laboratory, Air Force officials said.

The canisters had flaws making them unsuitable for continued storage and the Air Force had no need for the fuel. The chemical ignites in contact with air over 78 degrees Fahrenheit, officials said.

The Air Force plans to dispose of To determine the fate of; to exercise the power of control over; to fix the condition, application, employment, etc. of; to direct or assign for a use.
