EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway.  - A magnitude 3.1 earthquake shook an area near Edwards Air Force Base on Sunday.

The quake, which occurred about 3:40 p.m., was centered 28 miles east-northeast of the base, Caltech seismologist seis·mol·o·gy

`Skunks Works' veteran honored

PALMDALE - The late Ben Rich, former president of Lockheed Martin ``Skunk Works,'' was inducted into the Management Hall of Fame by the National Management Association.

Rich was the leader of the Skunk Works for nearly 20 years and was instrumental in the development of such aircraft as the SR-71 Blackbird, the U-2 spy plane and the F-117 stealth fighter. Rich died in January 1995.

A commemorative plaque for Rich will be permanently displayed at the NMA NMA Nederlandse Mededingingsautoriteit

Program to focus on architecture

LANCASTER - Artist Rich Sim will present a look at American architecture through videos and slides during a public presentation at 3 p.m. Wednesday in room 302 at Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties. , 3041 W. Ave. K.

Homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright - Taliesin West in Arizona and Falling Waters in Pennsylvania - and work by one of Wright's students, Paolo Soleri, will be featured.

Religious right forum scheduled

LANCASTER - Harry Schwartzbart, president of the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
 Chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State Americans United for Separation of Church and State (Americans United or AU for short) is a religious freedom advocacy group in the United States which promotes the separation of church and state, a legal doctrine seen by the AU as being enshrined in the Establishment , will be the featured speaker Sept. 16 at a public forum to discuss the religious right.

The program, ``Do We Have Anything to Fear from the Religious Right?'' starts at 7 p.m. in room 102 at Antelope Valley College, 3041 W. Ave. K. Admission is free. The forum is sponsored by the college's Flex Advisory Committee.

Included will be the showing of a 1995 ``Firing Line'' show hosted by William F. Buckley Jr. on the subject.
