ANTELOPE VALLEY: BRIEFLY : DEPUTIES ARREST 2 IN STEALING OF CAR.

ROSAMOND - Kern Kern, river, 155 mi (249 km) long, rising in the S Sierra Nevada Mts., E Calif., and flowing south, then southwest to a reservoir in the extreme southern part of the San Joaquin valley. The river has Isabella Dam as its chief facility.  County sheriff's deputies arrested two Lancaster men who they said led them on a short chase before crashing a stolen vehicle and running into the desert.

John Wynbrith Spears, 20, and Steven Shaanon Lakios, 19, were taken into custody shortly after 6:30 a.m. Monday following more than a two-hour search near Rodney and Myrtle streets.

Deputies were called to the 2900 block of 28th Street West shortly before 4 a.m. Monday after a resident told deputies he saw the two driving in a brown Buick and acting suspicious. When deputies arrived, the car was gone. Deputies spotted the Buick minutes later. As a deputy pulled behind the vehicle, the car fled at high speed.

College candidates to speak at forum

LANCASTER - Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  board candidates will speak at a forum Thursday at the college.

The forum will start at 7 p.m. in Room 102 of the Student Services Building at the campus, 3041 W. Ave. K.

The forum is sponsored by the Antelope Valley College Federation of Classified Employees and the college Federation of Teachers.

Palmdale's library to mark 20th year

PALMDALE - Mayor Jim Ledford will serve as master of ceremonies at the 20th birthday celebration of the Palmdale City Library from 4 to 7 p.m. today.

Dr. Robert C. St. Clair, who was mayor of Palmdale when the library opened July 27, 1977, will award prizes to the winners of the bookmark A stored location for quick retrieval at a later date. Web browsers provide bookmarks that contain the addresses (URLs) of favorite sites. Most electronic references, large text databases and help systems provide bookmarks that mark a location users want to revisit in the future.  design contest that was sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

The Youth Services Department will display the winning entries; and one $15 cash gift, provided by the Friends of the Library, will be awarded in each of the following age categories: 4- to 6-year-olds, 7- to 9-year-olds, and 10- to 12-year-olds.
