It's hard for Javier Ruelas not to reflect on the past when he comes to this city of lights, where triumph and tragedy happen almost daily.

It was here last May that his older brother Rafael lost his lightweight boxing championship to Oscar De La Hoya Oscar de la Hoya (IPA pronunciation: [ˈɑs.kɛɹ dɛ.lɑ.ˈhɔɪ.jɑ][1]) (born February 4, 1973) — nicknamed the Golden Boy . And it was here that older brother Gabriel's punches to Jimmy Garcia resulted in Garcia's death.

``On the way up, I was thinking about it,'' Javier said. ``But you have to go on.''

Javier, an 18-year-old senior pitcher/outfielder for Sylmar High School Sylmar High School is a public school in the northeast San Fernando Valley in the Sylmar district of Los Angeles, California. Established in the 1950s, it is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, District 2, and serves more than 3,600 students in grades 9-12. , is playing this weekend in the Bishop Gorman tournament. Sylmar (9-3) didn't start very well on Thursday, losing to Santa Fe Santa Fe, city, Argentina

 1-0 on a one-hitter.

Javier has made close to 10 trips to Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States.  over the years watching his brothers win and lose as they rose to fame and fortune. But the tragedy of last year affected him, too, even though he wasn't in the ring.

Last year, some fan came up to him and said, ``Where's your brother - the killer?''

``Everywhere you go, people remind me,'' he said. ``You try to get away from it, but it's hard.''

Unlike his brothers, Javier has stayed away from boxing. His passion is baseball and he's finally producing in a big way. This season, he's batting .500 (22 for 44) and is 3-0 on the mound mound, prehistoric earthwork erected over a burial place as a memorial or landmark, a defensive embankment, or a site for ceremonial or religious rites. Such structures are found in many parts of the world, but the name is applied in particular to those of North .

``I'm happy for myself that I'm not in the newspaper just because of my brothers,'' he said.

It's taken him longer than expected to become a top player. A broken ankle last year practically wiped out his junior season.

``He's finally believing in what we've been talking about for three years,'' Sylmar coach Gary Donatella said. ``He came to us dominating in the youth league, striking out 12 and 15 people. But few can do that in high school unless (you) blow smoke. He had to learn how to pitch.''

Sylmar is here through Saturday and Ruelas intends to have a good time.

``It's fun. People think I'm Rafael and they ask for my autograph autograph

.''

Even his teammates urge him to use his famous name. ``Come on, say you're Rafael and they'll let us in,'' they tell Javier.

Javier will gladly serve as tour guide in a town that knows his family well.
