ANOTHER RIVAL SWEPT ASIDE CHAMINADE HANDLES CRESPI CHAMINADE 6, CRESPI 2.

Chaminade finished third in the Mission League the past three years. But the Eagles smashed Crespi 12-2 on Tuesday and took a significant stride toward the championship by pulling away late in Friday's rematch.

``Everyone knew that wasn't the real Crespi (on Tuesday),'' said Eagles pitcher Bobby Paschal, who ran his record to 5-0 with a five-hitter. ``We didn't want to get insecure about that victory and think 'Oh yeah, we're just going to go out and kill them again.' That's not going to happen twice against a team like Crespi.''

But the junior left-hander stranded the go-ahead runs at the corners by drawing a called strike three to Dale Legaspi.

``I knew it was going to happen sometime because it's hard to go through a whole season without any earned runs,'' said Paschal, who yielded just one walk over the final three innings. ``I'm just trying to eliminate the big inning.''

That's what did in Crespi Tuesday, when errors contributed to an eight- run inning. On Friday, Chaminade immediately responded by scoring three times in the fifth after the Celts drew even.

Paschal's clutch strikeout of Legaspi fueled the Eagles' rally.

``They had momentum right there and they were coming back,'' Eagles catcher Jim Milkovich said. ``Shutting them down gave us a lift going into the next inning. It paved the way for our hitters.''

``We haven't really gotten our pitching right on line,'' Celts coach Scott Muckey said. ``We had a little bit of a letdown, but we did some good things, too. To go out and beat Paschal, that's a tough thing to do.''
