It currently has over 1.2 million members.

The DAV was controversial during the 2006 election cycle.

George was the brakes and front-end man at the old Mobil service station at Victory and Valley Circle. One day, a guy driving a handicapped-access van pulled in.

``We got to talking about people we knew, and how he got in that wheelchair - wounded fighting in France just before Thanksgiving 1944,'' George says.

``We buddied up after that. The more I learned about Marty, the more I realized what a hell of a guy he was. A few years later, he took me into the DAV See WebDAV.  with him.''

Originally, the DAV was strictly for veterans coming home from World War II to life in a wheelchair. But the bylaws The rules and regulations enacted by an association or a corporation to provide a framework for its operation and management.

``When Marty came home from the war, he was in a hospital out on Long Island. That's where he met his wife, Anne.''

Her husband was getting ready to be released from the hospital when they met, Anne said Wednesday, not sure Marty would have liked her talking about him like this.

``He was never the kind of man who wanted a pat on the back,'' she said.

The good ones never do.

``Marty was like a lot of the fellows who came home and got on with their lives. He didn't think he was special or anything like that.''

But he was special, George says. All his DAV buddies were special: They fought for their country, paid a heavy price for it, then got on with life.

``A lot of veterans who went through hell never talked about it, and their families feel the same way,'' he says. ``But I think it's important for people to know Marty's gone.''

When the phone rings these days, George picks it up a little slower than he used to, worried that the voice on the other end is going to tell him another one of his buddies has just died.

From monthly DAV meetings that once drew 75 or 100 vets, it's down to 25 or so now. And that's a good month, he says.

``Marty fought like hell to keep our chapter from going bankrupt. He was a brilliant man, with a big heart. He could finish The New York New York, state, United States

He probably wouldn't have wanted this public recognition. But then, the good ones never do.
