ANOTHER GREAT YEAR DONE 2004-05 SEASON FULL OF HIGHLIGHTS FOR AREA PREP TEAMS.

Now that most high school athletes are off for the summer, let's take a moment to look back at the amazing a·maze

The year began in grand fashion with Valencia's 29-10 football victory over Hart before a capacity crowd at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. . Valencia, led by quarterback Michael Herrick - who finished with more than 4,000 yards passing for the season - running back Shane Vereen and a group of talented receivers and linebackers, rode the momentum of that victory into the Southern Section Div. II championship game at Angel Stadium. Valencia lost to national power Mission Viejo Mission Vi·e·jo  

A community of southern California southeast of Irvine. It is mainly residential. Population: 96,300.

League mates Canyon, Hart and Saugus also came through with solid performances.

Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Christian also enjoyed a fine football season, advancing to the eight-man quarterfinals.

In girls' volleyball, junior Taryn Robertson helped lead Valencia to the Southern Section Div. I-AA quarterfinals, earning All-Southern Section Div. I second-team honors. Canyon also had a solid season, advancing to the second round of the Div. I-A playoffs.

Valencia proved to be the area's winningest team in girls' tennis and girls' golf, with the tennis team reaching the Div. III semifinals before losing to Brentwood. The golf team won the league title for the first time despite not having any seniors on the team. Eventually, the team finished second at the Northern Regionals and 10th in the Southern Section final.

Hart's Cinderella performance was the highlight of the basketball season. After making the playoffs as a wild-card entry, the Indians advanced to the Southern Section Div. I-AA final, losing 60-45 to Etiwanda at the Pond in Anaheim. Hart hadn't advanced to a boys' basketball final since 1959, but with the help of Ryan Wolfe - who came on strong during the playoffs - Hart qualified for the state tournament for the first time in school history, losing in the first round at Clovis.

No other Foothill League boys' team advanced past the second round of the playoffs.

In girls' basketball, three-time finalist Hart was upset in the second round of the Div. I-AA playoffs, but Valencia made it to the quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Long Beach Poly. Hart's Ashlee Trebilcock enjoyed another terrific season, earning Daily News Player of the Year honors for the third consecutive season, while Kelley Tarver and Day Weathersby carried Valencia.

No Foothill League boys' soccer team advanced past the first round of the playoffs, though Hart's Matt Valaika set a school single-season record with 27 goals. Canyon, led by Nini Loucks, was the area's top girls' soccer program, advancing to the Div. II quarterfinals.

In baseball, Saugus - led by the pitching and hitting of league MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip.  Thomas Milone - won the league title, finishing the regular season with 18 consecutive victories. Hart proved to be more successful in the playoffs, advancing to the quarterfinals before losing 4-3 to top-seeded Riverside Poly.

Valencia enjoyed a breakthrough softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  season, as pitchers Jordan Taylor and Courtney Baughman carried the Vikings to the Div. I final.

Valencia also came through with another excellent performance in boys' volleyball. Led by league MVP Teddy Goetz, the two-time Div. II champions advanced to the championship again but this time lost to Corona Del Mar Del Mar is the name of several places in the United States of America:

  • Del Mar High School, located in San Jose, California
  • Del Mar Racetrack, located in Del Mar, California
 in the title game.

In track and field, Saugus came on strong, as boys' throwers Alex Dekok and Matt Swarbrick and girls' distance runner distance runner

 Shannon Murakami advanced to the state finals.

Valencia boys' golfer Louis Amira emerged as a star, and Hart's Joe Greiner had another terrific season.

In swimming, Saugus' John Criste won the Southern Section Div. I title in the boys' 100 breaststroke.
