Don Quixote entered the Boston Ballet repertory in 1982, with Rudolf Nureyev's staging. In 1983, during a preview performance in Boston before a European tour, Nureyev injured himself on stage, and the tour had to be cancelled. In 1989, when artistic director Anna Marie Holmes first staged the Petipa work for Boston, Laura Young was injured on stage and Jennifer Gelfand was pulled in from the audience to dance the leading role. Gelfand, now a principal dancer with the company, also danced one of the Kitris in this spring's performances, which ended April 9.
