ANOTHER 100 JOBS TO BE AXED; TDs back at work after six crisis weeks.

MORE than 100 jobs were lost across the country yesterday.

Kildare County Council Kildare County Council is the local authority for County Kildare, founded by the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898 along with the other councils of Ireland. It covers the whole of County Kildare, although three towns - Leixlip, Naas and Athy - have separate Town Councils under  announced it will lay off 79 workers over the next two months as part of the Government's plan to reduce payroll costs in local authorities by three per cent.

The council said 48 staff on fixed-term contracts have been advised their contracts will not be renewed after January.

And 31 workers whose contracts expire in February and March will also go.

A spokesman added the move comes as the council looks at "new ways of handling services" following the Government cuts. GE Healthcare GE Healthcare is a $18 billion (USD) unit of General Electric (GE). It employs more than 46,000 people worldwide and is headquartered in Chalfont St. Giles, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom. GE Healthcare is the first GE business segment headquartered outside the United States.  said 50 jobs will be lost at its plant on Carrigtwohill, Co Cork.

A spokesman said less than half of these lay-offs would be forced redundancies.

Meanwhile, the Construction Industry Federation has predicted up to 55,000 jobs could be lost in the sector by the end of next year unless the Government acts.
