ANNUAL PICNIC HELD AT RENOVATED PARK.

SUNLAND - Some 200 residents joined Councilwoman Wendy Greuel Wendy Greuel is President Pro Tempore of the Los Angeles City Council representing the 2nd District. Greuel was elected in 2002 to fill the remainder of the term of Councilman Joel Wachs. She was elected in her own right in 2003 and reelected in 2007.  and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Antonio Ramon Villaraigosa (born Antonio (Tony) Ramon Villar, Jr. on January 23, 1953) is the mayor of Los Angeles, California. He is the first Latino mayor of Los Angeles since Cristobal Aguilar in 1872.  on Saturday for a picnic thanking community members for their hard work on behalf of their neighborhoods.

In actuality, the third annual Community Picnic and Celebration, held this year at the renovated Sunland Park Sunland Park may refer to:
  • Sunland Park, New Mexico
  • Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino, a racino located in the city of Sunland Park
  • Sunland Park Mall, a shopping mall located near the racino in El Paso, Texas
, was more about the community having the opportunity to thank Greuel.

``I think she's great,'' said 85-year-old Lillian Scharf, who met Greuel three years ago when the councilwoman was in Scharf's North Hollywood neighborhood to fill up potholes. Scharf approached Greuel and said, ``You need to fix my sidewalk.''

Scharf was surprised at Greuel's response.

``She said, 'OK, I'll see it now,''' Scharf said.

Scharf said her damaged sidewalk, used by many elderly people, was repaired a few days after she talked to the councilwoman.

``She's very caring to the people, and if she can help, she's there,'' Scharf said.

 student body president and an intern in Greuel's office, is impressed with her methods. He cited the spruced-up Sunland Park.

``It was trampled, destroyed,'' Powell said. ``You can tell that things have been changing.''

Villaraigosa said Los Angeles officials are paying close attention to the disaster relief.

``We're currently going to be engaged in an assessment of our capabilities and try to glean what we can learn from what happened to the people of New Orleans,'' Villaraigosa said.

Greuel, who attended the event with her husband, Dean, and their 2-year- old son, Thomas, said San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

 residents' aid to hurricane victims has been inspiring.

``There's a recognition by people to give back to the people affected by Hurricane Katrina,'' Greuel said. ``The outpouring has been tremendous.''

On her personal style of legislating, Greuel said in a big city like Los Angeles, she prides herself on sweating the small stuff.

``I'm known as 'the pothole pothole, in geology, cylindrical pit formed in the rocky channel of a turbulent stream. It is formed and enlarged by the abrading action of pebbles and cobbles that are carried by eddies, or circular water currents that move against the main current of a stream.  queen.''' Greuel said.
