ANNUAL LIGHTS FESTIVAL OPENS IN GRIFFITH PARK.

 Light Festival - billed as the most spectacular holiday display ever.

The mile-long Griffith Park Griffith Park is a large public park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains. It is situated in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The park covers 4,210 acres (17 km²) of land, making it one of the largest urban parks in North America.  festival opens to the public tonight and runs through Dec. 26 in celebration of ``A Century of Service'' from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is the largest municipal utility in the United States, serving 3.9 million residents in 2006. It was founded in 1902 to deliver water and electricity supplies to residents and businesses in Los Angeles. .

With holiday music and hundreds of thousands of bulbs along the tree- lined route, City Councilman Tom LaBonge Tom LaBonge (b. Los Angeles 1953), member of the Los Angeles City Council representing the 4th district. He has served since 2001, taking over the position upon the death of John Ferraro.  called it ``the greatest city holiday celebration in the West.''

Trams full of city workers cheered as they passed by a 200-foot DWP display that featured Santa Claus Santa Claus: see Nicholas, Saint.

Over the next month, more than 500,000 visitors are expected to drive down Crystal Springs from the festival entrance north of Los Feliz Boulevard to its finale at the Los Angeles Zoo The Los Angeles Zoo founded in 1966, is a large zoo located in Los Angeles, California, USA.

The Zoo, located in Los Angeles' Griffith Park, is home to 1,200 animals from around the world.

The displays include a 33-by-30-foot City Hall, a Los Angeles skyline, snow forest, reindeer hill and ice castle and vignettes of Venice Beach, Port of Los Angeles The Port of Los Angeles is located on San Pedro Bay in the San Pedro neighborhood of Los Angeles, approximately 20 miles (30 km) south of downtown. Also called Los Angeles Harbor and WORLDPORT LA  and Staples Center.

The $330,000 festival, which runs from 5 to 10 p.m. daily, will offer new free shuttle festival tours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday that board in the zoo parking lot. Pedestrians are also encouraged to walk the route.

Visitors are also invited to drop off unwrapped toys for the Los Angeles Fire Department's Holiday Toy Program for Needy Children.
