ANNUAL AIRPORT SHOW REVAMPED FOR 2005.

Byline: Dana Bartholomew Staff Writer

Hoping to boost last year's dismal attendance, Van Nuys Airport Van Nuys Airport (IATA: VNY, ICAO: KVNY, FAA LID: VNY) is a public airport located in Van Nuys, California in the San Fernando Valley, within the Los Angeles city limits.  officials have tuned up the annual aviation event to include a nighttime USO USO: see United Service Organizations.

Rockin' AirFest 2005 will be held May 14-15, featuring bands, vintage aircraft and displays, airport tours, flyovers and a preview USO stage show.

AirFest 2005 replaces the Van Nuys Air Show, an aviation spectacular that typically drew 300,000 visitors to the two-day event.

It was scaled back last year to make room for firefighting air operations at the airport and drew just 10,000 visitors - a disappointment for aviation buffs, vendors and charities that thrived for four decades on large crowds.

``We're really excited to add a music element,'' said Van Nuys Airport spokeswoman Stacy Geere. ``This is a kind of combination concert-in- the-park and aviation event.''

The free Rockin' AirFest will begin with a World War II-style USO show at 7 p.m. May 15, to salute the Bob Hope Hollywood USO that hosts service members flying through Los Angeles International Airport “LAX” redirects here. For other uses, see LAX (disambiguation).

The stage show will feature impressionist Fred Travalena Fred Travalena is an American entertainer, specializing in comedy and impersonations. He was born on October 6, 1942 in The Bronx, New York, and raised on Long Island, eventually moving to Los Angeles and developed a multi-faceted career with his characterizations of visible public , Bob Hope USO veteran Connie Stevens and the Liberty Belles USO Performance Troupe crooning such World War II standards as ``Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B.''

An Air Force Heritage Flight, featuring a World War II P-51 fighter in formation with an F-16 Falcon jet, will be followed by the arrival of a B-17 Flying Fortress and the last flying B-24 Liberator.

Airport officials hope the new Rockin' AirFest and beefed-up displays will draw at least 20,000 visitors.

``This will be glorious,'' said Mike Teilmann, executive director of the Bob Hope Hollywood USO, former USO producer and an emcee for next month's event. ``I would like it to become a tradition - for America to remember the armed services The Constitution authorizes Congress to raise, support, and regulate armed services for the national defense. The President of the United States is commander in chief of all the branches of the services and has ultimate control over most military matters. .''

Priority will be given to Iraq War veterans, Teilmann said.

Parking at the USO event is limited and by reservation only. To obtain parking passes, call (818) 909-3529 or see www.lawa.org/vny.

The May 15 show will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and feature more than 50 aircraft, including a historic Lockheed Super Constellation featured in the Academy Awarding-winning film ``The Aviator.'' A second flyover will be at 11:30 a.m.

A career resources center will post jobs in aviation.

Free parking and shuttle service will be provided from remote lots at California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , and a lot on the east side of the airport.

Such bands as Captain Cardiac and the Coronaries, veterans of three Super Bowls, will offer live rock 'n' roll.

``Seek me out, maybe I'll shake it,'' declared Coby King, chairman of the Van Nuys Citizens Advisory Council, a long time Air Show regular who welcomed the new rock format.

``The big air show was a great tradition. I'm sad that it's gone. (But) the Rockin' AirFest is a great event for the entire family.''
