ANNUAL AIR SHOW RAISES RECORD SUM.

VAN NUYS - Van Nuys Airport's annual air show raised a record $95,000 for local nonprofit youth and service organizations as more than 325,000 aviation enthusiasts turned out for the two-day event last weekend, officials said Thursday.

``We are extremely grateful for the public response to the expo, the support of the sponsors and the work of countless volunteers,'' said airport manager Selena Birk.

Some of the 20 charities benefiting from the air show include the Mid- Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Civil Air Patrol

While all of these people were pilots (and some still are), many are also noted for contributions in areas such as aircraft design and manufacturing, navigation or
 and an expo sponsor - awarded $9,000 for three local students pursuing aviation careers.

The two-day show featured flyovers by contemporary and vintage aircraft, displays on the ground and two World War II bombers believed to be among the last flying of their kind.

The show drew record crowds despite the blazing heat, which sent more than 50 people to heat stroke treatment centers on Saturday alone.
