ANNOUNCER DEFENDS NAKATANI\Denman, foe of whipping, says jockey did not act maliciously.

Byline: Kevin Modesti Daily News Staff Writer

Trevor Denman Trevor Denman (24 September 1952 in Germiston, Gauteng, South Africa) is an American sportscaster and announcer specializing in Thoroughbred horse racing. A part-time jockey and exercise rider, he started as a race caller in his native South Africa in 1971 at age 18. , the Santa Anita Santa Anita may refer to:

announcer and a well-known critic of abusive whipping, has come to the defense of Corey Nakatani, the jockey under investigation for whipping a horse after a race.

The 2-year-old colt Tillie's Joy broke down seconds after Nakatani struck him about 100 yards past the wire of a Dec. 29 race and had to be destroyed. The owners went on television a few days later and suggested Nakatani's action caused the horse's death.

"I'm very sorry for Nakatani," Denman said between races Sunday. "He was in the wrong place at the wrong time." He said it's ironic Nakatani is the rider involved because "he is not abusive of horses. If everybody rode like him, we wouldn't have a problem."

Denman, who has watched videotape of the incident, thinks Nakatani struck Tillie's Joy on the neck, not in the head or face.

"In the actual incident, he did not abuse the horse. He broke a rule," Denman said, referring to the California Horse Racing Board rule against whipping a horse after he has achieved his "maximum placing."

"But it was more like a tap . . . not malicious."

Denman said that more important than the accusation against Nakatani is the allegation by the jockey's attorneys that Tillie's Joy should not have been racing because of an existing injury.

"In the long term, maybe this is going to be positive for racing," he said.

Denman was one of the racing personalities who fought for 1992 rule changes that gave California the nation's toughest prohibitions on abusive whipping. He thinks that since then, "incidents of abuse are down 80 percent."

He said he would like to see further rule changes, prohibiting a jockey from raising his whip above his shoulders, and restricting the number of hits.
