ANIMAL SHELTER MAY HAVE TO MOVE.

Byline: Alex Dobuzinskis Staff Writer

BURBANK - The 13-year-old Burbank Animal Shelter "Dog Pound" redirects here. For the rap group, see Tha Dogg Pound.

An animal shelter is a facility that houses homeless, lost or abandoned animals; primarily a large variety of dogs and cats.
may be forced to relocate if construction of a nearby bridge proceeds, the shelter's manager said.

The shelter at 1150 N. Victory Place is within stick-throwing distance of the convergence of two rail lines, just southeast of the Burbank Empire Center. Although the project is still years away, Metrolink plans to replace the rail bridge over Victory Place, which would force the shelter to move.

The Burbank City Council is expected next month to discuss the long-term future of the facility, which is run by the Police Department.

``It wouldn't be prudent on our part'' to encourage the city to spend money upgrading a building ``that has the clock ticking One increment, or pulse, of the CPU clock. See clock speed and clock.  on it,'' said police Lt. Bruce Speirs, the shelter's manager.

Another problem for the shelter is that traffic on its street has increased since the Burbank Empire Center opened in 2001. That hurts the shelter's accessibility because it is illegal to turn left into or out of the parking lot, said Capt. Janice Lowers, who oversees the shelter.

City Councilman Todd Campbell said the city is ``probably going to have to think of an exit strategy for the animal shelter.''

city could be free from its budget troubles by then, he said.

``But I'm not ready to jump on it given our budget crisis,'' Campbell said.

Metrolink spokeswoman Sharon Gavin said the state's budget problems are putting a damper damp·er

on new projects. The agency's replacement of the more than 70-year-old bridge near the shelter is at least a decade away.

Most of the shelter's dogs are kept in a corridor with 40 kennels ken·nel 1

, and on Thursday most of the kennels were occupied. One of the dogs, who showed her age by the gray hairs on her face, had been in the shelter since being picked up at an Ikea lot on Dec. 31.

``It's going to be hard to place because of the age, an 8-year-old mix (pit bull),'' Speirs said.

Several years ago, a dog not adopted after seven days would be put to sleep, but at the direction of the City Council the shelter strives for 100 percent adoption and some dogs spend a lot of time at the shelter. In the spring, when cats breed, the shelter gets so many felines felines

it has to temporarily send them to the homes of the shelter's 75 volunteers.

The shelter's cats are kept in cages in a single room, with overflow space in the hallway and a separate quarantine quarantine (kwŏr`əntēn), isolation of persons, animals, places, and effects that carry or are suspected of harboring communicable disease.  room. To prevent disease from spreading between the cats and to make life easier for them, shelter officials would like a facility with enough space for four cat rooms.

``The time to look at (relocation) is when the budgets are tight, so that maybe somewhere down the road when the budgets aren't tight you're not (at) square one,'' Lowers said.
