ANIMAL RESCUER LOVES FURRY FRIENDS; SIMI VALLEY VOLUNTEER'S GROUP SPONSORING WEEKLY PET ADOPTION CLINIC.

Byline: Angela Randazzo Daily News Staff Writer

Some people see a stray dog or cat and drive on, thinking someone else will rescue it. Denise Esswein is that someone else.

Esswein is a volunteer and board member of Concerned People for Animals, a nonprofit organization Nonprofit Organization

that helps pets through lost-and-found listings, spay-and-neuter programs and adoptions.

The 70 volunteers with Concerned People for Animals form a network working through phone calls from those who have lost a pet and those who have found one.

``I always encourage people to hold the dogs, not to take them to the shelter, because animals get put down every day,'' Esswein said. ``They don't have a good chance at adoption because the competition is stiff.''

Esswein and her husband, Robert, a tax accountant, have lived in Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  for 11 years. She is the mother of four, including 2-year-old twin boys. Her household also has a menagerie of cats, dogs and rabbits.

Her business, Animal Nannies, a service that provides feeding, walking and care of pets while their owners are away, fits right in with her love of animals. She has been a volunteer with People Concerned for Animals for seven years.

``When I joined the group, the emphasis was on spaying spaying: see castration.  and neutering neu·ter

to stop the pet population,'' Esswein said. ``Helping with pet adoptions just followed, and I like doing that.''

Every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the group sponsors a pet adoption clinic at Petco, 309 Cochran St., Simi Valley. It also sponsors clinics at other Petco and Petsmart stores in Ventura County throughout the year.

Other phone assistance organizations include LIFE Animal Rescue, Pet Assistance, the Humane League and Animal Rescue Volunteers.

Animal rescuers say that having an identification tag An identification tag might be:
  • Dog tag, an identification tag worn by dogs
  • Dog tag (identifier), an identification tag used by the military
  • A radio identification tag, a scanner-readable microchip implanted into livestock and pets for identication.
on a pet can literally mean life or death. The Ventura County Department of Animal Regulation's shelter in Camarillo may be the last stop for a lost dog or cat without tags. Animals without tags are euthanized at the shelter if they are not adopted within six or seven days of their arrival.

``Having tags on an animal is important,'' said Norma Worley, animal control officer supervisor for the department. ``Animals with tags get an automatic 14-day hold and a better chance of finding their owner.''

Worley offered advice on other ways to put out the word on lost or found pets. People can contact veterinarians Veterinarians and veterinary surgeons (vets) are medical professionals who operate exclusively on animals. Well-known and notable veterinarians include:
  • Wayne Allard, a U.S.
or local mail carriers who might know of the pet. They can put ads in the newspaper; local newspapers will run low-cost or free ads. The Camarillo shelter also has a Web site that lists lost and found animals and those available for adoption. Sometimes just the low-tech sign on a post with the pet's description and your phone number works. And, of course, pets can be listed with the assistance organizations.

``We help animals find their owners or get a different life with another owner,'' Esswein said. ``Either way, every pet deserves a home.''
